This is an excellent article and very timely. Ongoing consideration of the ever-expanding channels will be the greatest challenge marketers face for the near future. Thanks for your perspective and excellent analysis on the subject.

Treasure of an article, Dave. I’m passing this one on to my team.
“Even icons are problematic on the device-based web: as purely graphical items on a page, we can’t rely on them being present in all situations…”
- C’mon content people, please let’s make the user experience more compelling with some simple tweaking of semantics, instead of the dry old “Click here to go there”.
Wow, super cool. Thank you for your excellent analysis on this matter. I have already forwarded it to my office colleagues and my close friends too, I’ve also save it for my future reference too. Thank you again.
Sorry, I was reading for a few minutes and jumping from topic to topic, then skipped down to the summary and saw that “thoughtful design” was required.
I couldn’t tell others your main point, or why they should read this. Do you have an elevator pitch — not a tease, but a functional summary of why they might want to listen?

Granted, it’s not really written for what you’re expecting here, but that wasn’t really the goal.
It’s a survey of the landscape, a look at what’s going on in the web outside of our traditional desktop comfort zone, and a summary of some of the issues we may need to start facing soon.
From your question it sounds like you’re looking for a reason to pass it around; that would depend on the audience. Working web developers and designers who build exclusively for desktop browsers are the intended target.
Very interesting and useful article. This is something we are having to put into the equation when developing our websites for the future. Existing CMSs are limiting and increasingly, people like us will be looking for developers who can offer solutions for all devices. Thank you.
