Pabini Gabriel-Petit and Janet M. Six tell me that the new online publication for User Experience has launched in full force. The publication is called UXmatters. In this issue Pabini writes a great welcome editorial for the publication. In addition there are several great articles that have launched in this first issue including Personas, Goals, and Emotional Design by Robert Reimann, Information Architecture 2.0 by Dan Brown, So the Necessary May Speak by Luke Wroblewski in the Communication Design column, Why People Matter by Whitney Quesenbery in the Universal Usability column, and Data-The Essence of a Digital Lifestyle by Dirk Knemeyer in the Imagine column. While I myself paticipated in the advisory board for this project it is really Pabini, Janet and their team of web developers and designers who made it happen. I wish them the best of sucess on their ezine and hope to be linking many more new and interesting articles over at UXmatters in the future.

Nick I had a look at their site. There are some coding issues (in Safari and IE/Mac anyway – other browsers seem okay) and the RSS feed is well-broken (of course, I emailed them to tell them this) but what significantly disturbed me was the informational design.There’s some poor design with regard to accessibility as a screenreader would see it. And the articles are long scrolling pieces with a narrow column of text bordered by empty blue fixed width boxes. I would have hoped that usability experience experts might have paid a little more attention to the usability of their online presence.
Mark, I agree. If I had more time to give I’d get my hands dirty helping them out. Instead my role was more of just advising them on the publishing process. They, in fact, did put out several calls to the design ID and Design communities for volunteers and got little responce back as I understand it… even criticized in some cases. You can’t say they didn’t try.
Yes. The UXmatters sure has problems, but what I find interesting is the content “problem”. Site seems to support same users as Digital Web … Well, maybe the articles are more academical. And I like the theory supported articles and sort of miss them here on DW. At the end users will decide what they’ll read but I personaly think that DW and uxmatters are tematically so close they should actually be one site!! So the user could get more knowledge (UXmatters) on the site with better user experience (DW). 😉
