Peter Van Dijck has written what he calls a braindump blog entry which pushes information architects to start working on A research agenda for information architecture. I think Peter makes some really good points here. Of course, it's often easier to say than to do... but I do agree that we have done little "doing" in the way of research. A few of us are focusing on the concept of bring user research, web analytics, and information architecture together to help inform web design (see Informed Web Design) but there is clearly a lot more work here that could be done.
