News : November 2000
nopreload‘s Daily Christmas Chocolink is now live.. check it out.
Jeffrey Zeldman is back in town from his keynote speaking event at PIX along side of Matt Owens and Josh Davis (names ringing a bell? Check out their interviews in digital web.) So what does this mean to you… it means there is another new issue of A List Apart to check out. In this issue Joe Clark tackles the challenges of making Flash Accessible.
It’s been a long time, but there is now a new episode of 0sil8 available for you to check out. Jason Kottke dives into VXML with Blogger. You hear everyone talking about “the web will be everywhere” …well here is a prime example of that.
Remember gabocorp? The site that defined it all. It’s still alive… reaching up from the grave… coming soon… very soon… buckle up… it’s going to be a wild ride. Props to K/files/includes/10.cssk for the heads up.
Hey readers, listen up a good friend of mine over at Strategic Recruiters is looking for a seasoned Design Developer for a 3 – 4+ week project for a consulting company in Vancouver, Washington. Unfortunately I am personally unable to take this offer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t apply for it. The ideal candi/files/includes/date.css must be an expert with Photoshop and be able to hand-code HTML. Please contact Shannon Klingler. (Open until 12-5-00)
Ok, I guess it has come down to this. Humor me here.
Humanity is beautiful. Mistakes are brilliant.
A new issue of Dysfunction8 is live and features Kane, Mezzetty and Halosphere.
nopreload keeps kicking ass. Mike Lewis is going all out for the holidays. Check out the new features on their site and Chocolinks to share!
…and just think, in one click of a button you can talk to most anyone out there…. Hello and happy holidays to my friends in Australia, Switzerland, Japan, London, Canada, Mexico, Africa and beyond.
will design web sites for food or money. That’s right, I am currently seeking a web design job, full time… willing to relocate if the job is right. Resume, contact information and experience is all there in my portfolio. We could call this the “save the zine fund” but that may be stretching it a bit far.
Ok, I have come to the conclusion that the aussies have gone insane… They have revamped just about every site they can get their hands on. Check out Justin Fox‘s redesign! I think the aussies are aiming for world domination, but that would be impos£¢¥§±µ¶º»ÇßЙ—<“÷ó擶¼—ù½ [end of transmission]
Some good design going on at eightball.com.au. Drag menus, semi-transparencies, pull out menus, etc., etc. Check it out. (suggested viewing in IE w/ Flash).
I smelled a redesign and I was right! Very slick design and content balance going on at Dik now. Humble bow to Andrew and Jade for kicking ass yet again. For those of you wondering “where is all the Flash?” or “where is all the eye-candy?” well, it’s about time you realized the web isn’t just about eye-candy anymore.. it’s about content. See content again for the first time… visit DiK.
It’s been a while since I checked out Holodeck 73, and it shows. Mathew Mejia has a new Anniversary Package (redesign) up and Surfstation has designed a new cover. Very cool.
It is a sad day for the Web. This really saddens me (if it gives JavaScript errors, try using IE to view). Can one lack such creativity that they must steal from another? Can one stoop so low as to not even change the code?! (See the title and code). Compare for yourself, this is the original cover that was created for Justin Fox’s artwork.
There has been a lot of controversial discussion on the Creative Republic mailing list about starting a blackboard where people could complain about and suggest listings of sites that have ripped off other sites. The theory is that there would be a handful of respected designers to decipher that either the claim is fact or false before posting it to the site. What do you think? Good idea?
George Silagadze tells us about a Toronto based web design company called e-axis. A whole lot of Flash, but none the less a very cool looking site. Check it out.
Not very often will a TV commercial drive me to the site. This one did. I am impressed. Consistent brand image. Good design. The site has the right balance of Flash, HTML, JavaScript and DHTML. Check out Ralph Lauren’s Polo.com. Once you get beyond the opening movie you will see. They also did something with the design that I would term as ‘smart design’. The next time you type in Polo.com you will not see the same intro movie. Cookies people, it doesn’t take much effort to add them. Here is the first well-designed and well-balanced site I have seen all year.
WOOHOO! The buggy Adobe Illustrator 9 gets an up/files/includes/date.css to address many major concerns. Look for an in-depth review of IL9 in a few weeks here at DWM.
Thanks for the invite, Nick! And thanks for the forum to write the article, The Red Queen Color Theory. I’ve gotten a steady stream of requests over the years from users of my color lab on how to pick compatible colors, which formulas are best, what colors induce people to part with their money, etc. I was finally able to articulate why I feel such things are inherently futile. Not at all unlike books on how to pick up girls: motive is abundant, methodology is doomed to fail. —Bob Stein, VisiBone
The Creative Republic mailing list has a good discussion going on about design rip-offs. The idea was proposed to start a black board or black list of some nature that would post site rip-offs and set them aside the original design that was stolen. The idea would be to discourage such blatant attempts at stealing someone hard earned work, art and design. Join the list and share your opinions on this.
There is a new feature over at Adobe on the San Francisco-based web design agency Phoenix Pop. Check it out.
Coudal.com takes us on a journey of the art of posters. I know Jesse will get some kicks out of this.
It’s words like this that make it all that much more worth it. Thank you.
Interested in commenting on the new issue of Digital Web Magazine or perhaps on the mag as a whole? There is a conversation going on at Dreamless.org, feel free to join in.
If you haven’t noticed, a new issue of Digital Web Magazine is now online. Special thanks to Carole Guevin, Bob Stein, Wanda Cummings, Makiko Itoh, Joshua Davis, Jesse Nieminen and Parker Torrence for making it happen.
Designers trying to accommo/files/includes/date.css Netscape 6 users might want to keep an eye on this known bugs list, which is straight from the horse’s mouth.
This weeks issue of A List Apart covers the myth of separation of style from content. I found this article extremely enlightening and very intriguing, as I am sure you will to. Bob Stein of VisiBone lays it on the line for us. This article is highly recommended.
For those of you who are crazy about interactive story telling, Banja has a new chapter out for you to explore. This has to be my favorite online adventure, hands down. Even if you’re not into the story side of it, it’s worth a look just for the artwork itself!
Stephen Lo asks us to vote for his sites in the Macromedia WWWhat? Awards. His entries are entry number 7 under “Online Advertisting” (Tailik.com) and entry number 19 under “Branding” (itCat Media).
Another new zine with a focus on art, music and design has hit the streets… check out DYSfunction8.
I am pleased to announce that Digital Web Magazine is number 8 on How’s top ten web sites list. We wouldn’t even be mentioned on this list if it weren’t for you, our readers. Thank you.
Netscape has finally released Navigator 6. Not even a day later and you can already hear the screams of web pages that do not work. K/files/includes/10.cssk expresses their feelings on this touchy subject matter, but leaves nothing to the imagination. People, as I have been saying for months, you will need to rebuild your HTML and recode your JavaScripts for standard compliance in order for them to ‘properly work’ with a standard compliant browser. Those are the facts.
Another slick site launch. This time Patric tells us about a site called d:chotomy which shares our passion for design… check it out.
Mike Lewis shares with us a killer site called Nopreload. It has it all; design that is slick, functionality that is easy to understand, interface that makes sense, content that is of value. I can see this site growing into to something grand.
Another great Zeldman interview on R35. These words are great motivators for any web designer or developer, even if Jeffrey himself may feel that he is in the doldrums. Please help cheer him up.
New this week on A List Apart, Dave Linabury goes through the ins and outs of Intranets. A must read for anyone who has been given the challenge of building the company’s internal web site.
Something we forgot to mention earlier this week. Have you seen the new Hesketh? What a beauty! Props to the team and Steven Champeon (it was good to finally meet you in San Francisco).
Just as the election nears a close here in the US, things are going live over in the Uk… There is another new issue of Kaliber/files/includes/10.css000 is out for your viewing pleasure.
Todd Purgason tells us that there is a new site up for Juxt Interactive. All Flash5 and it is used like it should be… check out the mailing list sign up form, sweet! Check out the news sections, up/files/includes/date.csss all the time.. I smell Generator! Very good job guys.
have you voted yet?
Some phat design from The Horus Project… a whole lot of flash, but a whole lot of good visuals too.
A new article that me and Makiko Itoh just finished has been published to WebReview today. It is entitled “Cool Site in a Day: The Shortest Eight Hours of Our Lives“…. which pretty much speaks for itself.
for the first time in a really long time, www.vena.net actually has more than a splash page. come take a look, bitch me out if it bugs on ya, and support my current incarnation as digital artist. a slight warning, however: you’ll need a fat pipe if you want to view the artworks. if you just want to keep tabs on what i’m doing these days, 56k will load everything else just fine.
Catching up of all the site up/files/includes/date.csss over the past four days… Jeffrey Zeldman has up/files/includes/date.cssd A List Apart, Kris Krug has up/files/includes/date.cssd *Spark-Online, and even Freezerbox has been up/files/includes/date.cssd. Mr. Davis has been doing some really wild stuff at Once Upon a Forest and a new issue of K/files/includes/10.cssk is out.
Just got back in town from the Web2000 conference, please bear with me as I regroup and launch the next issue. All outstanding emails will get replied to as soon as I have available time.
