I smelled a redesign and I was right! Very slick design and content balance going on at Dik now. Humble bow to Andrew and Jade for kicking ass yet again. For those of you wondering “where is all the Flash?” or “where is all the eye-candy?” well, it’s about time you realized the web isn’t just about eye-candy anymore.. it’s about content. It’s been a while since I checked out Holodeck 73, and it shows. Mathew Mejia has a new Anniversary Package (redesign) up and Surfstation has designed a new cover. Very cool.
It is a sad day for the Web. This really saddens me (if it gives JavaScript errors, try using IE to view). Can one lack such creativity that they must steal from another? Can one stoop so low as to not even change the code?! (See the title and code). Compare for yourself, this is the original cover that was created for Justin Fox’s artwork.
There has been a lot of controversial discussion on the Creative Republic mailing list about starting a blackboard where people could complain about and suggest listings of sites that have ripped off other sites. The theory is that there would be a handful of respected designers to decipher that either the claim is fact or false before posting it to the site. What do you think? Good idea?
George Silagadze tells us about a Toronto based web design company called e-axis. A whole lot of Flash, but none the less a very cool looking site. Check it out.
Not very often will a TV commercial drive me to the site. This one did. I am impressed. Consistent brand image. Good design. The site has the right balance of Flash, HTML, JavaScript and DHTML. Check out Ralph Lauren’s Polo.com. Once you get beyond the opening movie you will see. They also did something with the design that I would term as ‘smart design’. The next time you type in Polo.com you will not see the same intro movie. Cookies people, it doesn’t take much effort to add them. Here is the first well-designed and well-balanced site I have seen all year.
WOOHOO! The buggy Adobe Illustrator 9 gets an up/files/includes/date.css to address many major concerns. Look for an in-depth review of IL9 in a few weeks here at DWM.

The Creative Republic mailing list has a good discussion going on about design rip-offs. The idea was proposed to start a black board or black list of some nature that would post site rip-offs and set them aside the original design that was stolen. The idea would be to discourage such blatant attempts at stealing someone hard earned work, art and design. Join the list and share your opinions on this.

This weeks issue of A List Apart covers the myth of separation of style from content. I found this article extremely enlightening and very intriguing, as I am sure you will to. Bob Stein of VisiBone lays it on the line for us. This article is highly recommended.
For those of you who are crazy about interactive story telling, Banja has a new chapter out for you to explore. This has to be my favorite online adventure, hands down. Even if you’re not into the story side of it, it’s worth a look just for the artwork itself!

Netscape has finally released Navigator 6. Not even a day later and you can already hear the screams of web pages that do not work. K/files/includes/10.cssk expresses their feelings on this touchy subject matter, but leaves nothing to the imagination. People, as I have been saying for months, you will need to rebuild your HTML and recode your JavaScripts for standard compliance in order for them to ‘properly work’ with a standard compliant browser. Those are the facts.

Mike Lewis shares with us a killer site called Nopreload. It has it all; design that is slick, functionality that is easy to understand, interface that makes sense, content that is of value. I can see this site growing into to something grand.
Another great Zeldman interview on R35. These words are great motivators for any web designer or developer, even if Jeffrey himself may feel that he is in the doldrums. Please help cheer him up.
