News : July 2001
Well, after much delay I managed to get my system put together and even get online (though DSL is not up and running yet) to read some of those emails that have been stacking up. I also decided to launch my personal site that has been sitting on my harddrive for a few weeks now. This site will replace my existing portfolio and also alow me to talk about my up and coming book and events I will be attending, speaking at or sponsoring/planning. Designs by Nick Finck, simplicity is my style. Let me know what you think.
I really like the use of focus/blur imagery at kerus.org.
The cool people at Shift have mentioned Digital Web Magazine in their Cool Site Reviews for issue 057 (only the Japanese version is currently available, but the English version will be out any day now)… check it out!
There are currently 270 emails in my inbox… all of which require some kind of response (the ones I didn’t need to respond to have already been filtered away and the spam has already been deleted). There are also over /files/includes/10.css0 people asking to be included into the classifieds section (I’ll refrain from linking to that section because it will only result in doubling that figure)… that is in addition to the 270 emails I already mentioned. 18, the number of pieces my home computer is in at this time (upgrade time). Four, the number of sites I am supposed to design within the month. Zero, well, zero is the amount of Internet access I have at home until the 20th of next month. You got to love technology. Please take a number and form a single file line.
Carole Guevin (who wrote Visual Architecture: The Rule of Three) has just launched a new project – afterchaos – for thinkers, dreamers and doers.

While I was away, wondering the telecomm badlands in desperate search of a modem to save my soul from the fiery pits of non-access, A List Apart has released a new issue about Process, Methodology & Life Cycle by Meryl K. Evans.

The latest from the CHP Design Academy: Color Design for the Web.
A great review for Dean’s tutorial over at typographer.com… we love to hear good news. Keep the feedback coming.
Jeffrey writes more glitz and glamor.
After every time I venture to read Dean Allen’s Textism I have to pause for a moment… slump my head… and say to myself “Damn, he’s good” …perhaps a few times to really let it sink in…. and then I turn and go back to finding a focus for my book… all the while thinking to myself “Damn, if I could write half as good as that I’d be done with this proposal by now” …this process repeats itself every two weeks with variation in theme.
Just a quick note to let you know that my personal DSL connection has been down since Friday. So if you have not received a response from editorial about your article or cover art that is why. Thank you for understanding.
Digital Web Magazine is the Blog of Note July 14th! Thanks to Blogger for the kind recognition and link!
This tells you how busy I have been, apparently IASlash has been redesigned… still usable and informative as ever. While your there, check out today’s post on ACIA’s interview with Seth Gordon. If IA is your expertise, you probably do not want to piss off the librarians… you could learn a lot from a book… or perhaps, a library of books.
Do you get light headed when you hear the words “ASP”, SQL” or “backend programming?” Do most informational sites about these technologies make you dizzy when you read them? This week’s issue of A List Apart focuses on ASP programming for — wait for it — non-programmers. Check it out.
My favorite game site Banja has released a new seventh episode. Check it out!
I had the thrill of meeting Juanita Benedicto and several other great people the other night after I presented “The Triumphs and Challenges of Independent Web Publishing” for this month’s MIdg meeting. For all those who attended, thank you so much. And for those who couldn’t make it? Well, we will post an outline of what was (and what wasn’t) covered.
Another pitch for usability: on Slashdot of all places. Interfaces can be easy, read all about it. When you’re done, check out Ask Tog.
I have had my head buried in a new project that will release within a week if all goes well. So you could imagine my surprise when I emerged from my seclusion to find out that somebody loves us. The Designers Network has awarded Digital Web Magazine with the title “Site of The Week”
You’d think… I will be the first to admit that my, um, Schadenfreude Quotient is high when I read stories like this. But on a deeper level it explains why articles like this and this get written…
Don’t forget, tomorrow (Wednesday) I am going to be speaking about “The Triumphs and Challenges of Independent Web Publishing” at the Portland Multimedia | Internet Developer’s Group meeting in Portland, OR. More information about PM|IDG can be found on their site.

Curt Cloninger of Lab404 is interviewed over at SpeechTherapy, check it out!
All this talk about unrest in the “design community” has left me feeling like I missed a memo or something. It’s as if the problems (whatever they are) only exist because we keep talking about them. I say: It’s time for designers to stop pointing fingers and just do some good work. That’s what it’s supposed to be about, no?
Daphne Tako (AKA Daphne Blum) has an article up over at SpeechTherapy called The Envelope, check it out!
I agree with Gabe’s viewpoint… shit or get off the pot.
If you haven’t already, be sure to swing by and check out Pete Czech’s SiteCritique.net… add your own site for critiqing and while your at it, be sure to critique Digital Web Magazine, it’s under the Design section.

From the sounds of it, Kaliber/files/includes/10.css000 is shutting their doors on the same day as Dreamless.org …two major community sites shutting down on the same day raises some concern, so we are looking into the matter and we will post what we find out right here.
Joshua Davis tells us that he is going to be taking a long overdue vacation from Dreamless.org starting on the 15th. Perhaps we should organize a power-outage event where everyone powers off the home computer for one day…. time to relax and stop working on our personal projects for a day.

Jeffrey Zeldman does some Q & A over at Adobe. There is some good reading here… now if we can just get Adobe to bring back Zeldman’s HTMLHell column.
Tonight, as glowing ambers of sulfur and sprinkles of what seems to be star dust reflect of my eyes and the sounds of the 1812 Overture ring true in my ears, my heart tells me that sometimes we have to fight the ugly battle to truly appreciate the virtues of freedom, life, love and happiness. Happy Independence Day everyone.
Dean Allen, who will soon grace our pages, has some advice: why suffer with generic quotes, when you can make a clearer and more attractive presentation by using the entities for real quote marks? The entities in question are ‘, ’, “, and ”. I’ll let you sort the rest out.
Jeffrey Zeldman’s book, Taking Your Talent to the Web, hits number 127 on the charts at Amazon.com. If you are a traditional designer and you want to start working on the web, this is the book you should already own.
